Reiki Principles

The accepted, traditional stories regarding Mikao Usui say, that in the early 1920s, Usui received a vision while meditating 21 days on Mt. Kurama. This vision gave Usui detail instructions regarding a spiritual, energy healing method he had been searching to find. For the few short years afterwards, until his death in 1926, Dr. Usui opened schools and healing centers that practiced the healing method now known as Reiki. His work became famous throughout Japan, primarily because the central theme of his practice included teaching people to heal themselves and they did, indeed, heal.

After Dr. Usui died, his students placed a large memorial stone near his grave. This stone contains the original principles of Reiki as taught by Dr. Usui. The stone reads:

“The secret art of inviting happiness,

The miraculous medicine of all diseases,

Just for today, do not anger,

Do not worry and be filled with gratitude,

Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people,

Every morning and evening join your hands in prayer,

pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth,

Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind.

The founder, Usui Mikao”

All Reiki practitioners, at some point in their training, are introduced to these principles. Many incorporate these principles into their daily practice of meditation or prayer. Others display the principles in their treatment room, provide copies to their clients or do other mindful things in their practice to remind them of these principles. Quite simply, these principles are the foundation of Reiki practice.

‘Just for Today, Do Not Anger’

Anger is a fear-based, powerful emotion that’s used, most often, destructively. Fear, anger and stress are the central causes of disease. Anger triggers an energetic response in the physical body down to the cellular level and stays there. Everything is energy and that includes thoughts and emotions. When a person is saturated in anger energy, the body’s energy vibrates at a lower frequency. Transmuting anger emotion into creation energy raises the energy vibration transforming destructive energy into constructive energy.

In the energy world, all time is now. What we perceive as minutes ticking away, is actually our consciousness expanding. By staying present, aware, and conscious of ever changing thoughts and emotions, we have the ability to chart our own destiny in a good way when we can transmute negative energy into positive actions.

‘Do Not Worry’

Worrying takes old energy from the past and catapults it straight into the future, leaving a person wondering why the same stuff keeps happening over and over again. It’s difficult not to worry, but try practicing it for a day. Stay centered, send healing energy to the problem or situation with the intention that it has already been resolved. Even if you have to do this a thousand times a day, it is still worth the effort.

‘Be Filled With Gratitude’

Practicing gratitude opens and expands energy and consciousness. Gratitude adds joy and spontaneity to life by removing criticism and judgement. Gratitude opens pathways of unconditional love which is the highest energy frequency the human body can feel. Be grateful and feel the heart expand.

‘Devote Yourself to Your Work’

This is not in reference to a job that provides security but rather the reason and purpose for being human. Human beings have a purpose, a reason for being, a mission to accomplish. We have been conditioned to believe our life’s purpose is to have a career, but this is not true. Our purpose is to co-create life in a meaningful way. Explore your creativity and devote energy to that endeavor.

‘Be Kind to Others’

We are one. Kindness and respect to others mirror the kindness and respect to the self. The inability to be kind can be seen as a reflection of areas that still need a little work and development. Mindful treatment towards others allows for consciousness to grow and develop. We are each other’s mirrors. Practicing kindness acknowledges we are here to help one another.

The Reiki principles are gentle reminders that responsibility to heal begins with awareness, mindful behavior and patient practice. The principles provide a good framework to promote healing. But the principles are a lot like an onion; begin peeling the layers and you will find deeper and deeper messages about the very nature of universal energy.
